Yummy Devils:

A band from Vancouver, B.C. Canada - the Pacific Northwest, with beginnings in 1983 and performing until 1986.

Inspired by the first punk wave in Vancouver in the late 70's, eschewing the synthesizer trend, and foreshadowing the Lo-Fi/grunge movement of the late 80's and 90's they started with a $50 guitar, $50 drum set, and some home built instruments (notably a home made steel drum mounted on sawed off hockey sticks - taking the DIY initiative to an extreme).

Eventually they evolved into a more traditional formation with guitars, bass and drums though still keeping their primitive approach. They were popular with crowds but their Lo-Fi style caused difficulties with sound and recording people often causing conflict. Most notably when the sound man at the Railway Club refused to work with them and walked out after seeing their drum set.

Influences: Punk, garage, early country, folk art, surfing, native cultures, modernism, psychedelia...

As their music originally existed only on traded cassettes which were self recorded on the legendary Tote'n Tape, this history survives through a found box of recorded tapes which have been resurrected onto vinyl and video to present and preserve their unique, entertaining and precursive aesthetic. An aesthetic they pioneered and which later came to be classified as Lo-Fi:
